A customer in Madhurawada wrote to me last month with a photo of her ponytail slipping out of a scrunchie by eleven in the morning. Her hair is fine and silky, the kind that slides straight out of anything with too much stretch in it. I sent her a different one, sewn on a shorter elastic, and she messaged back three days later to say it had survived a full day of teaching plus an auto ride home.
Fine hair does not need a stronger grip. It needs less bulk and a tighter elastic. Those are two different problems, and most accessories solve neither.
Why the usual scrunchie slides out
A big oversized scrunchie needs a thick ponytail to push against. If your hair does not fill the fabric tunnel, the elastic never fully compresses, and gravity does the rest. When I sew for fine hair, I cut the fabric panel narrower and use a firmer elastic cut shorter than standard. The scrunchie looks smaller in the packet. It stays put all day.
The Tulip Scrunchie Trio Pack is my usual suggestion for this. The cotton has a bit of texture to it rather than being slippery, and three of them means you can keep one in your bag, one at your desk, one at home.

Three things you can do today
- Twist against the direction of your hair. Wrap the scrunchie the opposite way from how your ponytail naturally twists. The friction alone buys you hours.
- Clip onto a base, not onto loose strands. Make a tiny twist or a half plait first, then close the clip over it. Fine hair gives a clip nothing to bite into otherwise.
- Use two small clips instead of one big one. Weight spread across two points does not drag the way a single heavy bow does.
Clips that work on thin hair
Alligator clips with a proper spring hold better than snap clips on fine hair, as long as the bow on top is light. The Midnight Stripe Piggytail Bow works on the two-clip principle, and the Phulkari Bow uses embroidered fabric that is stiff enough to hold shape without needing extra interfacing weight inside.
Evergreen Winter Styling Set is the one I reach for most.

Everything here is sewn by me in small runs, which means when a fabric runs out it is genuinely gone. If you are unsure what suits your hair, message me and tell me how thick your ponytail is. I will tell you honestly which piece to skip.
