The Five Minute Hairstyle for Mornings You Overslept

It was 7:48 on a Tuesday when I understood this hairstyle properly. My alarm had gone off at 6:30 and I had negotiated with it three times. The auto was already honking at the gate, my hair had that second day bend near the crown, and I had ninety seconds before I had to be out the door with fabric scissors and a delivery bag. What I did that morning I have now done maybe two hundred times.

The twist and tuck, five minutes, one accessory

This works on straight hair, wavy hair, thick Indian hair that refuses to stay in a clip, and hair that was washed two days ago. It is better on day two hair, actually. Freshly washed hair slips.

Step by step

• Brush only the top. Ten seconds with your fingers from forehead to crown. Do not detangle the ends. Nobody will see them.
• Gather low, at the nape, not high. A low base hides bent sections and does not pull at your temples all day.
• Twist the length away from your face until it starts to coil on its own. That coiling is the whole trick.
• Loop it up into a loose bun and hold with your thumb.
• Wrap your scrunchie twice, the second wrap pulling a little tighter than the first. On the last pass, pull only half the bun through so a tail sticks out.

That tail is what makes it look intentional instead of rushed. Then pull two small pieces loose at the front and stop touching it.

Why the accessory matters more than the bun

A messy bun with a plain black elastic reads as a messy bun. The same bun with the Cosmic Bunny Tail Scrunchie reads as a choice. The long ears fall over the bun and cover the uneven bits, which is genuinely useful and not just pretty.

I sew these with a wide elastic channel, three rows of stitching at the join, because a thin elastic digs a crease into thick hair by lunchtime. The purple galaxy cotton came from a two metre cut I found in Jagadamba, and when it is gone it is gone.

Keep one where you will actually find it

Mine lives on the doorknob of the bathroom, not in a drawer. On days I want something neater for a meeting, I swap in the Jhilmil Bow and change nothing else about the bun. The White Winter Hair Bow (S) does the same job on a half up style.
