Why Your Scrunchie Keeps Slipping, and How to Stop It

A customer messaged me last month with a photo of her ponytail at 4pm, halfway down her neck, and asked what she was doing wrong. Nothing, as it turned out. She had two scrunchies on rotation, one from me and one from a market stall, and only the market one was sliding. That comparison told me everything. Slipping is almost never about your hair. It is about how much fabric is gathered, how strong the elastic is, and how you wrapped it that morning.

The three things that make a scrunchie let go

1. Too little fabric on the elastic

A scrunchie holds because the gathered fabric creates friction against your hair. I cut my fabric strips at roughly three times the finished circumference, so when it is gathered the ruche is dense and springy. Cheaper scrunchies are cut at closer to one and a half times, because fabric is the expensive part. Squeeze one flat in your fist. If it compresses to almost nothing, there is not enough body in it to grip.

2. Elastic that has already stretched out

Thin round cord elastic loses its memory fast, especially in Visakhapatnam humidity. I use flat braided elastic, six millimetres wide, and I stretch each length hard between my hands before it goes anywhere near the machine. If it stays long after that pull, it does not get used. You can test yours the same way. Stretch it and let go. A tired elastic stays lazy.

3. Slippery fabric with no texture

Pure polyester satin looks beautiful and grips very little. That is why my satin pieces are cut wider and gathered tighter, and why I often pair them with a cotton or velvet in a set. Velvet has natural nap that catches the hair and holds all day.

Four different weights in one box, so you can match the fabric to the day.

Fix your technique in ten seconds

  • Twist against the ponytail, not with it. Turn the scrunchie the opposite way to your hair’s natural twist on the second loop. It locks instead of unwinding.
  • Two wraps, not three. A third wrap overstretches the elastic and shortens its life.
  • Grab hair from the base. Slide your fingers down to the scalp before wrapping. Most slipping starts from a ponytail that was loose at the root.
  • Damp hair needs velvet. Satin on wet hair will travel every time.

If your hair is fine or freshly washed, go for the Evergreen Winter Styling Set, because the clips take over where a scrunchie cannot.

Give it a rest day

Elastic recovers if you let it. Rotate between three or four pieces rather than wearing one favourite until it dies. That is partly why I sell the Celebration Hair Accessory Set as a group. Each one lasts longer when it is not doing all the work.

I sew these in small batches, so when a fabric runs out it is usually gone for good. But the construction stays the same every time.
